Benefits of a Living Will

Are there benefits of a living will? Absolutely. The peace of mind of having executed a living will document is the benefit of having a written statement that sets forth what your wishes would be in the event you found yourself in the unfortunate situation set forth in your living will: perhaps in a persistent vegetative state, or minimally conscious, or showing no behavioral response to your environment.

If it is difficult for you, while you are healthy, to imagine that something awful might happen to you, or that through the process of aging, you might end up comatose, you are not alone.

But, most people when asked, if they would want to be kept alive by an artificial means, if in those circumstances, say a resounding, "No!" That would be the benefit of a living will: If you would be one of those people whom would not wish to be maintained on life support, the benefit to you would be that you would indisputably and clearly, have made your wishes known.

Further, another benefit is the peace of mind it offers to family and friends to not only be able to see a document setting forth your wishes, if the time should come, it also resolves areas of possible dispute and differing opinions as to what you would have wanted, if you could convey your wishes. So there are very definite benefits of a living will, IF you have definite opinions of what you would and would not want, if you found yourself unable to convey your wishes to your doctor or your family and friends. Give them guidance. Advise them of your wishes, and remove the guesswork by setting forth your wishes in writing!
